What Are Dangerous Levels Of Formaldehyde?
Formaldehyde is a colourless gas that occurs naturally in the environment. It is also found in many household and building products, including wallpaper, paints, and glues. However, the presence of formaldehyde does not automatically make a product dangerous.
Health Canada reviewed several studies to determine what levels of formaldehyde can create health concerns. One study looked at children between six months and three years old. It found no increased risk of asthma hospitalization between 10 and 49 µg/m³ (micrograms per cubic metre). The risk increased slightly between 50 and 59 µg/m³. Above 60 µg/m³, the study found a significant increase in the risk of asthma hospitalization.
Based on this research, Health Canada recommends an 8-hour residential exposure limit of 50 µg/m³, or about 40 parts per billion (ppb). In practical terms, the average formaldehyde concentration in your home’s air should stay at or below 40 ppb over eight hours. This limit is intended to protect children with asthma from respiratory symptoms.
Health Canada also recommends a short-term exposure limit of 123 µg/m³, or 100 ppb, based on a one-hour average. This limit is intended to protect against irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat.

For comparison, Health Canada has measured formaldehyde in homes across Canada. Average daily levels were about 10–40 µg/m³, or 8–32 ppb, which is below its recommended long-term exposure limit.
Do MDF Cabinet Doors Emit Formaldehyde?
Yes, MDF cabinet doors can emit formaldehyde when the MDF is made with resins containing formaldehyde.
To make MDF, manufacturers break wood down into fine fibres and mix them with resin before pressing the mixture into dense sheets using heat and pressure. The resin binds the wood fibres together. Urea-Formaldehyde, or UF, is one of the most popular resins because it offers a strong bond at a low price point. MDF products made using UF can release small amounts of formaldehyde into the air over time through a process called off-gassing.
However, knowing that MDF can emit formaldehyde does not tell you whether those emissions are high enough to be a health concern. To answer that question, we need to look at how much formaldehyde MDF can emit and the limits Canada places on those emissions.
How Much Formaldehyde Do MDF Cabinet Doors Emit?
Unfortunately, there is no easy answer to this question. The actual emissions of a cabinet door vary based on the MDF, the resin used to make it, and other conditions.
For this reason, it is more useful to look at the maximum emissions Canada allows from MDF products. Canada’s Formaldehyde Emissions from Composite Wood Products Regulations, often called CANFER, set formaldehyde emission limits for MDF and several other composite wood products used in cabinetry, furniture, and trim. The regulations are intended to reduce formaldehyde exposure in indoor air and the risk of related health effects.

At first glance, the numbers shown above can look concerning. For example, Health Canada’s short-term indoor air guideline is 0.10 ppm, while the MDF limit is 0.11 ppm. However, comparing those numbers directly gives you the wrong picture.
An MDF panel testing at 0.11 ppm does not mean your kitchen air will contain 0.11 ppm of formaldehyde. The MDF limit measures emissions from a product during a controlled test. On the other hand, Health Canada’s indoor air guideline measures the total concentration in the air you breathe from all sources in your home.
If you are concerned about formaldehyde levels in your home, start by reducing possible sources and increasing ventilation (e.g. opening windows). If you do want to measure long-term exposure, Health Canada recommends sampling your indoor air for eight hours or more. This is important because formaldehyde levels can change over time and may increase with heat and humidity. Keep in mind that an air test measures formaldehyde from all sources in your home, not just your MDF cabinet doors.
How Does Canada Regulate Formaldehyde Emissions From MDF?
Canada does not rely on manufacturers simply claiming their MDF meets the limit. Instead, all composite wood panels must undergo required testing to get certification. Without certification, these products cannot be imported into or sold in Canada.
And yes, the rules still apply when these panels become part of a finished product. Finished goods must use regulated composite wood panels that meet the applicable emission requirements.
For you as a homeowner, confirming that the MDF meets Canadian requirements is more useful than determining the emissions from an individual cabinet door.
Are MDF Cabinet Doors Safe If You’re Worried About Formaldehyde?
At the end of the day, the question you want answered is, are MDF cabinet doors safe? To answer this fairly, we need to be careful with the word safe.
MDF can release formaldehyde, and formaldehyde can affect your health at high enough concentrations. A cabinet door manufacturer cannot predict the total formaldehyde level inside your home because cabinets are only one possible source.
However, Canada regulates formaldehyde emissions from MDF, requires testing, and requires certification for regulated products sold in Canada. Health Canada also says the cancer risk from formaldehyde concentrations found in most Canadian homes is very low.
