By the end of this article, you’ll understand the profile and construction options available so you can choose the right door style for your project.
The Profiles For Melamine Cabinet Doors Depend On The Collection
The cabinet door profiles available to you depend on the material collection used to build the door.
One common option is NEXGEN, a wrapped cabinet door material developed by Olon Industries Inc. NEXGEN materials use an MDF core with a decorative polyester wrap. These materials create cabinet doors that are stable, durable, and consistent in appearance.
You can order NEXGEN cabinet doors in select colours developed by Tafisa® and Uniboard®.
Olon Industries also produces VelourTouch materials, which use a similar wrapped construction but feature a soft-touch surface finish.
The Tafisa Karisma collection is another option. Unlike NEXGEN products, Tafisa produces both the moulding components and the decorative panel materials used for Karisma doors. Because of this, Karisma materials offer their own set of cabinet door profiles.
Since each collection uses different materials and mouldings, the available cabinet door profiles and assembly options can vary.
Cutting Edge Offers Five Profiles For Melamine Cabinet Doors
Cutting Edge currently offers five cabinet door profiles across several melamine cabinet door collections.
Three of these profiles come from the Tafisa Karisma collection, while two profiles are available in NEXGEN and VelourTouch materials produced by Olon Industries.
Because these collections use different mouldings and materials, each collection offers its own set of cabinet door profiles.
Profiles Available In The Tafisa Karisma Collection
The Tafisa Karisma collection includes three profile options: Delta, Zeta, and Kappa. These profiles were previously known as Alpha, Beta, and Gamma, respectively. Tafisa updated the names as they refined the moulding designs.
These profiles are only available in Tafisa Karisma colours.
The Delta Profile From Tafisa Karisma (Formerly Alpha)
The Delta profile from the Tafisa Karisma collection is a classic 90-degree shaker profile. This design closely resembles traditional shaker cabinet doors, making it one of the most popular profile options.
If Cutting Edge has enough material in stock, the lead time for Delta profile orders is typically 8-15 working days.
The Zeta Profile From Tafisa Karisma (Formerly Beta)
The Zeta profile from the Tafisa Karisma collection is a stepped chamfer profile. The stepped design adds more visual detail than a standard chamfer.
Cutting Edge’s distributor no longer keeps this moulding in stock. The lead time for this profile is between 6 and 8 weeks. In addition, orders for the Zeta profile may be subject to a minimum order quantity.
The Kappa Profile From Tafisa Karisma (Formerly Gamma)
The Kappa profile from the Tafisa Karisma collection is a slim shaker profile. Slim shaker doors feature narrow frames that create a clean, modern look.
When Cutting Edge has enough material in stock, the typical lead time is 8-15 working days.
Profiles Available In NEXGEN And VelourTouch Materials
Cutting Edge also offers two cabinet door profiles using NEXGEN and VelourTouch materials produced by Olon Industries. These profiles are not available in Karisma colours.
The Chamfer Profile For NEXGEN And VelourTouch Materials
The Chamfer profile available in NEXGEN and VelourTouch materials features a simple angled edge along the frame.
If Cutting Edge has sufficient material in stock, the lead time for this profile is typically 8-15 working days.
The Shaker Profile From NEXGEN And VelourTouch Materials
The Shaker profile available in NEXGEN and VelourTouch materials features a traditional shaker design with slightly radiused edges. This profile is slightly deeper than the Delta profile available in the Karisma collection.
When Cutting Edge has enough material in stock, the lead time for this profile is typically 8-15 working days.
Cutting Edge Offers Two Assembly Methods For Melamine Cabinet Doors
Now that you understand the profile options, it’s time to look at the available assembly methods.
Cutting Edge offers two construction methods for melamine cabinet doors: mitered construction and cope and stick construction. Each method has advantages and limitations depending on the profile and material collection used.
Mitered Melamine Cabinet Doors
Most melamine cabinet doors produced at Cutting Edge use mitered construction. In this method, the frame pieces meet at a 45-degree joint at each corner.
Cutting Edge recommends the mitered door style for several reasons.
- The mitered joint provides more surface area for glue, thanks to the mortise and tenon joint. The extra glue surface area means the mitered joint is more stable.
- Unlike a cope-and-stick melamine cabinet door, mitered doors do not require edge tape around the exterior of the cabinet door. Instead, the original decorative wrap is left intact.
- You can order mitred melamine doors in any of the five profiles above.
Cope And Stick Melamine Cabinet Doors
Cope and stick cabinet doors follow the same construction method used in many traditional wood cabinet doors. In this method, the vertical stiles run the full height of the door, and the rails connect to the stiles with a 90-degree joint.
However, this construction method has several limitations when used with wrapped cabinet door materials.
- You can only choose Delta or Shaker profiles with a cope and stick construction. The other profile options (Zeta, Kappa, and Chamfer) are not available with a cope and stick joint.
- The cope and stick method exposes raw MDF at the ends of the stiles. To hide the raw MDF, our team has to apply matching edge tape to the exterior edges. The edge tape can add a visible line around the doors, distracting the eye.
- The cope and stick joint has less surface area for glue, compromising the stability of the door.
Different Profiles Are Available for Each Product Line
With several profiles and multiple material collections available, it can be difficult to remember which combinations are possible. To make this easier, the chart below shows which cabinet door profiles are available within each material collection offered by Cutting Edge.
Keep in mind that Cutting Edge stocks only a limited selection of colours from each collection due to warehouse space. If we don’t have enough material in stock, we may need to order the material before producing your cabinet doors.
