Updated March 6, 2026

Are VelourTouch® melamine cabinet doors right for your project? Learn the pros and cons before choosing this alternative to painted doors.

A variety of melamine cabinet doors - from left to right, dark grey, white, light grey, light blue, and brown.

Large projects, such as hotels and multi-unit housing, can provide steady work for months. However, these projects often come with tight budgets and strong competition. To win these jobs, you need cabinet doors that look good and keep costs low. Painted cabinet doors offer the clean, solid-colour look homeowners look for. Unfortunately, the finishing process makes them expensive. Because of this, many contractors look for doors that offer a similar look at a lower price.

At Cutting Edge, we’ve worked with wrapped cabinet door materials for years. Our product range includes cabinet doors made with VelourTouch® materials from Olon Industries Inc. Over the years, we’ve learned where these doors work well and where they may cause problems.

VelourTouch Cabinet Doors Use Wrapped Melamine Materials

VelourTouch cabinet doors use a wrapped surface instead of paint or stain. Olon Industries Inc. developed the VelourTouch products to create cabinet doors with a smooth, solid-colour finish.

These cabinet doors use an MDF core, which helps keep the doors stable and cost-effective. A decorative surface wraps around the MDF to create the finished look. This surface resists fingerprints, fading, and everyday wear and tear.

Many wrapped cabinet doors mimic the look of real wood with textured grain patterns. However, the VelourTouch collection focuses on solid colours with a soft-touch matte finish. These doors mimic painted cabinetry without the expensive finish.

Pros Of VelourTouch Melamine Cabinet Doors

VelourTouch cabinet doors offer several benefits for budget projects. These doors offer a clean finish at a lower cost than painted doors.

1. Cost-Effective Alternative To Painted Doors

Painted cabinet doors can be expensive. Between the door and the painted finish, the cost can exceed $50 per square foot.

That price is too high for high-volume or budget-sensitive projects.

However, VelourTouch cabinet doors offer a similar look at a lower cost. The construction, recessed panel, and solid colour finish mimic the look of painted cabinet doors.

At less than $30 per square foot, these doors can help you stay competitive when quoting painted jobs.

And how does the cost compare? At less than $25 per square foot, Velour Touch NEXGEN doors easily beat painted doors.

2. Stable, Durable, and Fade-Resistant

VelourTouch cabinet doors use an MDF core. This helps reduce movement over time. Unlike solid wood, MDF does not warp or twist with humidity changes.

The decorative wrap also provides several benefits. It offers heat resistance, scratch resistance, and fade resistance for everyday residential use.

Because the finish resists fading, replacement pieces should match the original cabinet doors.

3. Matte Soft-Touch Finish

Solid-colour cabinet doors often show fingerprints, especially high-gloss or matte slab products.

The VelourTouch collection offers a soft-touch matte finish designed to resist fingerprints. The surface makes the doors easier to handle during installation and keeps the finished kitchen looking clean.

4. Wide Range Of Solid Colours

The VelourTouch collection features 12 solid colours, from white and grey to deeper tones like blue and black.

These colours reflect many of the finishes homeowners choose for painted cabinetry.

However, colour availability can also introduce a few limitations, which we’ll explore next.

Cons Of VelourTouch Melamine Cabinet Doors

While VelourTouch melamine cabinet doors offer several advantages, they also have limitations. Understanding these limits can help you decide if this option fits your project.

1. Cutting Edge Only Stocks Five VelourTouch Colours

Although the VelourTouch collection includes 12 colours, Cutting Edge only stocks five of them.

Warehouse space limits the number of materials we can keep on hand. We cannot store every colour in the VelourTouch collection. As a result, you may not be able to order the colour you need.

2. Minimum Order Quantities Limit Special Orders

If the colour you need is not in stock, ordering other colours may not be practical.

Our supplier requires us to order enough material to produce about 300 cabinet doors. Because of this, ordering a new colour for a small project is not possible.

However, we may be able to bring in a new colour if your project requires several hundred cabinet doors.

3. Lead Times Can Be Longer

Wrapped cabinet door materials can have longer lead times.

If we run low on VelourTouch materials, our supplier needs time to produce and ship new stock. In some cases, restocking can take up to eight weeks.

To reduce delays, our team monitors stock levels and reorders materials as needed. However, very large orders can create temporary shortages.

4. Solid Colours Make Mitre Joints More Visible

Wrapped cabinet door materials can have slight variations. These small differences can cause uneven mitre joints. With wood-grain or textured finishes, these variations are hard to spot. However, solid-colour finishes do not hide these differences as well.

In some cases, this can create a thin shadow line along the mitre joint. While this does not affect the strength of the door, it may be noticeable.

At Cutting Edge, we warranty melamine cabinet doors if the mitre joint varies by more than the thickness of a sheet of paper.

VelourTouch Cabinet Doors Can Work Well For Budget Projects

So what does this mean for your projects?

VelourTouch melamine cabinet doors are a strong option for budget-sensitive work. They provide a solid-colour finish that resembles painted cabinets but costs much less. The MDF core creates a stable door, and the fade-resistant wrap ensures replacement pieces match the originals.

However, no product works for every situation. Limited availability, minimum order quantities, and visible mitre joints may affect your choice. Always consider these factors before choosing VelourTouch cabinet doors.
