An 80's style apartment room with a wall bed folded down. Custom wall bed or Murphy bed doors help these items blend into the surrounding cabinetry.

You or your client wants a Murphy bed that blends into the surrounding cabinetry. But that sleek, built-in look means adding custom doors. Now you’re trying to find clear pricing, and you’re coming up short. Most suppliers don’t display pricing online, and if they do, it’s difficult to tell what’s included. Without solid numbers, it’s nearly impossible to budget your project, much less quote a client confidently.

At Cutting Edge, we’ve made Murphy bed doors for over 15 years. We developed this product from the ground up for use with wall beds, working closely with cabinet makers and contractors across Canada. Because we design and manufacture these doors ourselves, we know exactly what goes into the cost, from raw materials to finishing options to final delivery.

By the end of this article, you’ll know:

Wall Bed Or Murphy Bed Doors Cost At Least $48

The starting cost for a Murphy bed or wall bed door is $48. This price is for a simple paint-grade MDF door. The base price is for a flat panel door designed to mimic the look of a 5-piece shaker door without interfering with your Murphy bed hardware.

These doors have a flat backer panel, which can be ¾” or ⅝” thick, depending on your preference. We apply faux stiles and rails on top of that panel to create the appearance of a traditional cabinet door. The result is a product that offers a clean look, lightweight performance, and structural stability, which is essential for vertical installations such as Murphy beds.

When needed, our team applies a matching edge tape around the sides of the panel. Edge tape isn’t always required, especially with painted doors, but it’s necessary for wood veneer backer panels.

At this base price, the door is raw and ready to finish.

How Pricing Works For Wall Bed Or Murphy Bed Doors

We use a square foot pricing model to calculate the cost of wall bed doors. To calculate the total square footage:

  1. Multiply the width by the height (in inches)
  2. Divide by 144
  3. Multiply that by the cost per square foot

For example, a 24″ x 60″ door equals 10 square feet (24 x 60 = 1,440 / 144 = 10). If you’re using painted MDF at $32 per square foot, that door would cost $320 before finishing.

Now, contractors are eligible for contractor pricing, which can reduce your cost by 10% to 20%. This discount is ideal when quoting large projects.

Next, we’ll look at the factors that increase the cost of wall bed doors.

What Increases The Cost Of Wall Bed Or Murphy Bed Doors?

Several factors increase the cost of Murphy bed doors. Here are the most common ones:

Wood Species and Backer Panel Thickness

Wood species and panel thickness have the greatest impact on the cost. MDF is the most budget-friendly option, especially for painted finishes. However, if you’re working with wood veneers or natural finishes, prices can rise quickly.

Wood Species ⅝” Backer Panel ($/sq ft) ¾” Backer Panel ($/sq ft)
MDF $31 $32
Maple $38 $36
Walnut $43 $39
Rift Cut White Oak (Select Grade) $44 $49

It’s worth noting that ¾” panels are often slightly cheaper in real wood because they’re more popular and readily stocked.

Edge Banding

For wood veneer doors, edge banding is required to cover exposed panel edges. Both the thickness and wood species of the edge tape affect the cost.

Wood Species 1mm Tape 1.5mm Tape
MDF N/A N/A
Maple +$3 +$5
Walnut +$4 +$6
White Oak +$4 +$5

If you’re painting MDF wall bed doors, you don’t need edge banding, making this an easy way to save.

Finishing

Adding a finish, whether it’s a paint, stain, or clear coat, raises the cost.

Finish Type Minimum Price Price Per Sq Ft
Clear Lacquer +$22 +$15
Stain & Lacquer +$32 +$21
Paint +$45 +$30

Painted finishes are the most expensive due to the prep and coating process, while a clear lacquer is the most affordable option.

Sequence or Grain Matching

You can request either sequence matching or grain matching if you want your wood grain to align across doors.

  • Sequence matching ensures the panels are from material with similar grain and tone. This option costs $10 per square foot, or a minimum of $15.
  • Grain matching aligns the grain across adjacent doors by cutting them from a single sheet in the order you plan to install them. This option costs $13 per square foot, with a minimum fee of $20.

Keep in mind that grain matching only works within the size limits of a 4’ x 8’ sheet. Some panels may not fully align if your Murphy bed is over 4′ wide or 8′ high. In addition, only the backer panels will be sequence- or grain-matched, not the stiles and rails.

What Decreases The Cost Of Wall Bed Or Murphy Bed Doors?

While several factors increase the price of wall bed doors, there are also ways to reduce the cost.

Contractor Pricing

As a contractor or cabinet maker, you can qualify for discounted pricing. This discount ranges from 10% to 20%, depending on the size and frequency of your orders. Setting up a contractor account is quick and gives you consistent access to better pricing.

Large Orders

Your order size can also impact your shipping and product cost:

  • Orders over $1,000 may qualify for reduced or even free shipping
  • Orders over $10,000 receive an extra 10% discount, even on already-discounted contractor pricing

Grouping your orders can result in significant savings.
