Let’s ensure your next order is correct the first time.
What Are the Standard Specifications for Thermofoil Cabinet Doors?
Epic Doors produces fully custom thermofoil doors. That means they produce every door to your spec. However, they do follow standard defaults that keep production efficient and predictable.
Understanding these defaults will help you avoid issues and know what to expect.
There Is No Default White For Thermofoil Cabinet Doors
White doors are one of the typical sources of confusion. There are multiple whites available, and customers often request the standard white.
However, Epic Doors does not have a default white. That means you must always specify a colour code.
(Having said that, their Textured White (WHT-01) is a popular choice and closely matches white melamine.)
What to do: Include a colour code on every order.
Default Back Material: White Melamine
Unless you say otherwise, Epic Doors will use white melamine as the back material.
They do have other options available:
- Maple melamine
- Black melamine
- Raw MDF (ideal for painted applications)
What to do: Confirm your preference for back material when quoting.
Thermofoil Cabinet Door Profiles Have Default Edge Profiles
Each door profile from Epic has a default edge profile assigned to it. Unless requested, this is the profile you’ll get.
However, you can request a different edge at no additional cost.
What to do: Provide a specific edge profile code if required.
Stile and Rail Widths Are Standard (But Can Be Changed)
Each door style and profile has default stile and rail sizes, but these can be modified to suit your needs.
In addition, Epic Doors will reduce stile and rail widths as needed for small drawer fronts and narrow doors:
- For drawers under 8″ tall, Epic will reduce the rail width to maintain a proportional look. The reduced rail width varies depending on the door style you’ve selected.
- For narrow doors, Epic ensures that the stile width still allows for proper hinging. If the stile gets too narrow for hinges, they’ll recommend switching to a slab front instead to avoid installation issues or structural problems.
What to do: Double-check the stile and rail widths on small drawers or narrow doors to ensure the recommended widths work for your design.
Centre Rails and Stiles Are NOT Added Automatically
Epic Doors does not include extra centre rails and stiles unless requested. However, for larger doors – over 48″, particularly in Shaker styles – Epic recommends:
- Adding extra hinges
- Adding horizontal rails to tall doors, or vertical stiles to wide doors
This addition helps prevent sagging and warping over time.
What to do: Add centre rails or stiles to oversized doors to avoid warping.
Mullion Frames: Standard Sizing and Profiles
For custom mullion frames, Epic uses the following defaults:
- Mullion bar width: Approx. 1″ (can vary slightly by door style)
- Bar profile: Matches the inside profile of the door frame
- Example: A Shaker 300 will have matching bevels on both sides of the mullion bars
What to do: Provide clear drawings or sketches when requesting mullion frames.
Custom Options May Include Upcharges
Certain changes and features cost more. Common upcharges include:
| Feature | Upcharge |
|---|---|
| Changing back material | $2.60+ |
| U-groove panel | $3.30+ |
| Beaded panel | $6.60+ |
What to do: Communicate any customizations early so we can price them in from the start.
Matching Custom Profiles: How It Works
Epic is well-equipped to match existing profiles, but it takes time and input.
Providing the following helps ensure an accurate match with a minimum of back-and forth:
- Clear, detailed drawings or diagrams
- Photos from multiple angles
- Specs on width, height, and edge shapes
In some cases, Epic may choose to provide a sample door for approval. In most cases, a one-time programming fee will apply for a brand-new style.
What to do: Send us all the information you’ve got, and we’ll guide you through the process.
When Do the Standard Specifications Apply?
Epic Doors uses standard defaults for every thermofoil cabinet door they produce. But these defaults only apply when you don’t make specific requests.
If you don’t specify a back material, they’ll use white melamine. If you don’t request centre rails on tall doors, they won’t add any. And if you don’t select a colour, they’ll wait for clarification.
At Cutting Edge, we review every order before sending it to Epic for production. If something seems off or is missing, we’ll flag it and follow up. That way, you get exactly what you expected.
The good news is that you don’t need to memorize Epic’s rules. You need a supplier who understands them and keeps your best interests in mind.
However, it is important to understand the standards.
