How Shipping Works at Cutting Edge

Shipping Costs, Accessorial Charges, and Standard Destinations at Cutting Edge

Cutting Edge Doors & Woodworking covers all shipping costs (excluding accessorial charges) on orders with a subtotal of $1000 to our standard destinations. If your order subtotal is less than $1000, or your location is not one of our standard destinations, our team will ship your order out prepaid and include the freight charges on your invoice.

Accessorial Charges Get Added While Shipments Are in Transit

Accessorial charges are not paid by Cutting Edge Doors & Woodworking. Even if your order receives free shipping, you can still receive accessorial charges.

Accessorial charges are additional fees applied to a shipment by the shipping company. Because these fees are not added until after the shipment is delivered, it is very difficult to estimate the actual cost of a shipment.

For this reason, you will receive accessorial charges on a separate invoice. Rest assured, our team will only invoice you for the accessorial charges applied to your shipment at the exact cost the carrier charged.

Common Accessorial Charges and the Approximate Cost

The actual cost of accessorial charges can vary depending on the carrier used to deliver the shipment to your location. Below is a list of the most common accessorial charges with an estimated cost.

A call before delivery fee is applied when the company is requested to notify the receiver when a shipment will be delivered. The company will provide an estimated time range. The shipping company will also charge you a Delivery by Appointment fee if you request a specific delivery time during this notification call.

This fee is applied when the delivery driver has to carry a shipment from the truck to the building. The cost will increase depending on the weight of the shipment.

A delivery-by-appointment charge is applied when a shipment has a specific delivery date and time requested.

All deliveries are allotted an average amount of time for unloading – usually 15 minutes. The shipping company will charge you this fee if you take longer than 15 minutes to unload the shipment. The charge will increase every additional 15-minute period the driver has to wait. For example, if it takes 45 minutes to unload a shipment, the fee will be at least $65.10.

This charge is applied when the delivery driver uses the liftgate at the back of the truck to deliver a shipment.

A re-consignment fee is applied when an address change or delivery location is changed once the shipment is in transit.

A re-delivery fee is applied if:

  • there is no answer at the delivery location
  • the receiver asks the driver to deliver the shipment at another time
  • the driver is unable to reach the delivery location.

This charge is applied when the delivery location is in a residential zoning area or is a gated/private residence.

This charge is applied when the delivery location is outside the nearest town limits.

What To Do If Your Shipment Gets Damaged In Transit

Despite our best efforts to package your cabinet doors and other products securely and safely, damage can still occur in shipping.

If your shipment has visible damage, you must show the driver the damage and make sure they record the shipment as damaged. Our team requires pictures of the outside of the package(s) showing the damage. In addition, we need a picture of each damaged part as you open the shipment up. Our team requires these pictures and the sizes of any damaged parts within 24 hours.

Without this information, we may not cover damaged pieces under warranty because our team cannot submit a freight claim.

If your shipment has no visible damage on the exterior, but the parts are damaged, you must take pictures of the damaged parts. These pictures and the sizes of all damaged parts need to be sent to our team as soon as possible.

We will replace any freight-damaged parts as soon as possible. If our team files a freight claim, the replacement pieces will ship as soon as they are complete, regardless of the freight claim status.

Cutting Edge Ships to Many Destinations Across Canada

Cutting Edge will cover the shipping costs if your location is one of our standard destinations and the subtotal is over $1000.

Below is a list of standard destinations for each province. If you don’t see your location on this list, we recommend you contact our team for an estimate of shipping costs to your location.

If your location is not on our standard destinations list and your order subtotal is over $1000, we will cover up to $250 of shipping costs. However, once your order is over the $2500 subtotal, we cover shipping costs up to 10% of your subtotal. For example, if your order subtotal is $3500, we cover up to $350 of shipping costs. If the shipping costs exceed the amount we cover, we will put the remaining costs on your invoice.

Frequently Asked Questions

You may still have some questions about our freight policy. We will do our best to answer the frequently asked questions below. However, if you don’t see the information you are looking for, reach out to our team by email at orders@cuttingedgeinc.ca or by phone at 1 (800) 267 6662.

We only ship orders using the carriers we have set up. If you want to use a different carrier, you must arrange the shipping and have the shipping company pick your order up from our shop. If you choose to arrange the shipping, please notify our team to confirm when your carrier will arrive at our shop. Your carrier can pick up shipments between 9:00 am and 11:00 am on weekdays.

While you can’t request any shipping company, you can request one of our standard shipping companies. This may mean we have to pass some shipping costs on to you if the shipping company you request is much more expensive than the option we recommend.

Small orders (less than 15 pieces, and with no piece(s) longer than 36") ship by Canada Post, Purolator, or Loomis/DHL. Large orders (more than 15 pieces, or with a piece longer than 36") ship by ACE, Jay’s, Manitoulin, or VanKam. Our team will choose the shipping option based on your location and preference.

Absolutely! Just let us know which orders you want us to ship together, and we’ll look after the rest.

Yes, you can request our team estimate the accessorial charges that might apply to your shipment. However, we can't guarantee an accurate estimate because of the wide price range of accessorial charges.

One of the best ways to avoid accessorial charges is to choose to pick up your shipment from a nearby depot. However, storage fees can apply if you don’t pick up your shipment from the depot within 24 hours of their notification call. Storage fees are a minimum of $34.60/day.

Some other options are:

  • Ensure you have a forklift at your site and an operator available when you know a shipment is en route. We will notify you and provide a tracking number when your shipment leaves our shop.
  • Make sure the delivery address you have chosen is clearly within a commercial zoning area.
  • Make sure that any changes to your delivery address get relayed to our team immediately.

We have to draw the line somewhere, so we do require the subtotal to be over $1000. However, you could consider adding some sample doors to your order to take the price up that last bit!

We cover the freight costs, not the accessorial charges. Any accessorial charges will get passed on to you on a separate invoice.

You can request our team consider adding your location to the standard destinations list. However, your requested location has to meet a few requirements before we can make it a standard destination.

First, we have to ship to that location frequently - at least two or three times a month. Without frequent shipments to your location, we cannot get a guaranteed freight rate from a shipping company. Second, your location must be near a route currently used by one of the shipping companies we use. If the location you request is off the beaten path, we cannot meet the third requirement. Third, the guaranteed freight rate we receive from a shipping company must be no higher than $250 per average shipment.

If your location meets all three requirements, we will add it to the standard destinations list.
