Getting the details wrong on a cabinet door order can ruin your day or your whole project. Even mitred cabinet doors have enough moving parts to cause problems. You might assume your supplier’s standard specs will match what you’re expecting, only to be surprised when the doors show up with no centre rail, the wrong frame width, or materials you didn’t ask for. When you’re the one stuck explaining it to your client, the trust you’ve built takes a hit, all because you didn’t get a clear answer up front.

At Cutting Edge, we believe these kinds of misunderstandings shouldn’t happen. We’ve worked with hundreds of clients across Canada who were tired of unreliable suppliers and vague details. That’s why we wrote this article. Our goal is to eliminate confusion, save you from costly mistakes, and give you confidence when ordering mitred cabinet doors.

So, what exactly can you expect when you order mitred doors from Cutting Edge? In this guide, you’ll learn:

What Are the Standard Specifications for Mitred Cabinet Doors?

Let’s break down exactly what you’re getting when you order mitred doors from Cutting Edge. These standard specs apply unless you request something different when placing your order.

Mitred Cabinet Doors Use 45° Joints

Mitred cabinet doors have 45° angled joints at each corner, giving them that sharp, picture-frame style. This construction means the stiles and rails come together diagonally instead of the traditional butt-joint approach you’d see on shaker doors.

Because all four frame pieces meet at a perfect 45°, every side of the door must be precisely cut. This matters most on drawer fronts, where both the stiles and rails need to be reduced to keep the mitres meeting at a 45° angle.

Frame Widths Change with the Mitred Profile You Choose

Each mitred profile has a default frame width. Some profiles are slim and modern, while others are wide and more decorative. Once you choose a profile, the frame width will stay consistent across the entire door.

If you’re working with drawer fronts or narrow panels, it’s important to know that you’ll need to size the whole frame down to match, or the corners won’t align properly. It’s not possible to combine multiple stile and rail widths in one piece.

Mitred Door Thickness Depends on the Profile’s Detail

The thickness of a mitred cabinet door depends on the profile you’ve selected. More detailed profiles tend to be thicker to allow for the details. That extra thickness can make a big difference in your cabinet spacing.

If your doors are too thick and you haven’t planned for the clearance, you could end up with rubbing, poor alignment, or even installation issues.

Mitred Doors Have a Single Panel with No Centre Rail or Stile

One major difference between mitred doors and other styles is that mitred doors only have one panel. Usually, your supplier won’t add centre rails or stiles unless you request. This gives a cleaner look, which many clients love. However, it also means these doors don’t have the added strength that comes with internal framing.

For this reason, large doors may not have warranty. At Cutting Edge, mitred doors larger than 43″ tall or 30″ wide are not covered by warranty for warp or twist unless a centre rail or stile is added. The problem is, most mitred profiles don’t have a centre rail or stile option. This becomes a critical design choice – if your profile does have a centre rail option, you can safely order larger pieces. On the other hand, if your profile doesn’t have a centre rail option, ordering larger pieces can be risky.

Wood Grade Defaults to Standard for Best Value

Our team uses standard grade wood by default for mitred cabinet doors. Standard grade wood offers the best balance between quality and price. It’s smooth enough for a flawless finish, but not so premium that you’re overpaying for appearance.

However, you can choose from other wood grades to better suit your design.

Mitred Doors Come Raw and Sanded, Ready to Finish

All mitred doors ship raw and sanded to 180-grit. We don’t apply any primer, sealer, or finish at our shop unless you’ve requested finishing.

Before you begin finishing, scuff sand and inspect each door closely. Taking the time for this inspection can prevent delays in your finishing booth.

When Do the Standard Specifications for Mitred Cabinet Doors Apply?

Unless you’ve told us otherwise, our team will build your mitred cabinet doors to our standard specifications. These standards are in place to make ordering simple, reliable, and consistent – for our team and for you.

That said, we know no two projects are exactly alike. Notify us when placing your order if you have specific needs. While we can’t promise every request will be possible for every profile or situation, starting that conversation early gives us the best chance to work with you and explore what’s feasible. At the very least, it ensures there are no surprises when your order arrives. The more information you share upfront, the better we can support you in getting it right the first time.
