Many melamine cabinet doors have an MDF core and a decorative surface such as thermally fused laminate (TFL) or polyester wraps. Some manufacturers use branded component systems, such as NEXGEN® components developed by Olon Industries Inc.

Melamine Cabinet Doors Have 1-Year Warranty Coverage From Cutting Edge
Melamine doors from Cutting Edge have a one-year limited warranty coverage. We measure that year from the date the melamine cabinet doors leave our facility; you can find the shipping date on your invoice.
What Does The Warranty Cover?
The warranty covers any manufacturing defects, such as damaged or incorrect pieces. Some more examples of manufacturing defects are:
- Incorrect sizing (since some of our machinery is only accurate to within 0.76mm, the doors have to be more than 0.76mm undersized or oversized for us to warranty them)
- Doors built with the wrong material
- Gappy mitre joints
Our warranty coverage also covers shipping damage. If your shipment is damaged in transit, send our team pictures of the damaged parcels and pieces so we can submit a freight claim.
You can request a warranty replacement if you receive a cabinet door with a manufacturing defect or shipping damage.
What Doesn’t The Warranty Cover?
However, the warranty does not cover the following:
- 5-piece melamine doors 43” or taller, which warp during their lifetime. Because melamine products have an MDF core, they aren’t as unstable as wood doors. However, the 5-piece melamine door styles do not allow us to add extra components like center rails to stabilize the doors.
- Off-level joints. Because melamine is a pre-fabricated product, there can be slight variations from piece to piece. When this occurs, it causes the joints to be slightly off-level, about the thickness of a piece of loose-leaf paper. Off-level joints are especially noticeable in solid-coloured doors because no patterns or textures are there to distract the eye.
Potential Problems With Melamine Cabinet Doors And Their Solutions
Melamine cabinet doors aren’t perfect. Indeed, you’ve already briefly looked at two potential problems that might be a game-changer for you. While we don’t want to freak you out (these are problems that might occur), it is only fair to mention them before you decide to purchase melamine doors.
Warping And Twisting
As we’ve already mentioned, melamine cabinet doors have an MDF core. Although MDF is durable and stable, it’s not as naturally strong as wood. Thus, melamine doors 43” or taller may warp (or bend) because the overall weight of the door is more than the MDF of the frame can keep straight.
Warped 5-piece melamine doors are very rare. Over the last two years, we produced 15,387 melamine doors; of those doors, one was warped.
If your melamine cabinet doors warp, you can correct the warp by adding additional hinges. In fact, we recommend you add a third hinge to any melamine doors between 43” and 60” tall. You should use at least four hinges for doors over 60” tall. Additional hinges help to support the door and hold it straight.
Off-Level Joints
You’ve already learned that the warranty coverage does not cover off-level joints. Unfortunately, our team has had limited success in preventing this issue. The root cause is slight thickness inconsistencies in the wrapped components used to build the door, which are impossible to correct. However, our team does check the quality of the doors before shipping them out. Any doors that fail our quality inspection get rejected and remade.
So what can you do? Simply ensure you or your customer understands that this is a potential issue. And, if you receive a melamine door with joints that are more off-level than the thickness of a sheet of loose-leaf paper, contact our team for a replacement piece.
What If You Receive Defective 5-Piece Melamine Cabinet Doors?
While our team conducts quality checks on every shipment before it leaves our shop, you may still receive a defective door. What do you do then?
