You’re in the middle of a project when you realize something’s gone wrong. Maybe you miscounted, your supplier sent the wrong size, or your client made a last-minute change. Whatever the reason, your job is stalled and you don’t have time to wait through the usual lead times. You need a solution fast. The good news is that your supplier offers a rush order for cabinet doors, but what will it cost?

At Cutting Edge, we understand that even a minor hiccup can destroy your schedule. That’s why we’ve built a rush order system that works. Every week, our team assists contractors and cabinet makers who are in the same situation as you. Last year alone, we produced more than 7,000 cabinet doors on rush orders, and we’ve learned a lot about making it fast, reliable, and worth your investment.

In this article, you’ll find everything you need to know about rush orders, including:

Rush Orders Shorten the Lead Time for Cabinet Doors

Rush orders exist to help you get back on schedule. However, the lead time for a rush order depends on your supplier. At Cutting Edge, rush orders usually ship within a third of the standard lead time.

For example, our standard lead time for unfinished cabinet doors is 7 to 15 working days. Rush orders for unfinished doors usually ship within 3 to 5 working days, depending on the door style.

This quick turnaround is possible because your order gets the highest priority in our production process. We rework our internal schedule as needed to fast-track your doors through manufacturing. However, all that extra effort comes at a cost.

A Rush Order for Cabinet Doors Costs At Least $25

Rush order pricing varies widely between suppliers, and most don’t publish their costs online. At Cutting Edge, our minimum rush fee is $25. If your order subtotal is over $250, the rush fee is 10% of that subtotal. For example, a $750 cabinet door order would come with a $75 rush fee.

Typical Rush Order Cost Breakdown

To give you a sense of what to expect, here’s how a typical rush order might break down:

Order Subtotal Rush Fee (10%) Est. Shipping (Truck) Total Est. Cost
$250 $25 $125 $400
$500 $50 $125 $675
$750 $75 $125 $950
$1,000 $100 $125 $1,225

*The shipping costs shown above are estimates and will vary depending on the destination, carrier, and order size.*

The rush fee helps cover the cost of adjusting production workflows, expediting materials, and making sure your doors are prioritized without impacting other customer orders.

Still, you won’t always be charged a rush fee, and it’s important to know when you might be exempt.

When the Rush Order Fee Might Not Apply

You don’t pay extra when you’re fixing a problem our team caused. We never charge a rush fee if an error on our end, such as a miscommunication, contributed to the need for a rush order. That’s part of our commitment to making things right.

In addition, our team will never charge you a rush fee for warranty orders or if we can fit your order in without disruption. These situations aren’t uncommon, and we always check before applying any fees.

When the Rush Fee Will Apply

However, a rush fee will apply if your order requires us to adjust our current workflow. This is typically the case if you’re requesting a ship date sooner than our 7–15 day standard lead time, or if your order includes more than 10 pieces.

Even smaller rush orders may require adjustments depending on the current capacity of the production line. If we need to interrupt another job or pull staff to prioritize your order, we’ll apply the rush fee.

To make things easier, we always include the rush fee on your confirmation if it applies.

What Else Affects the Cost of a Rush Order for Cabinet Doors?

The rush fee is just one part of the total cost. Several other factors can drive the price up, especially if you’re working against the clock.

Shipping Costs for a Rush Order May Be More Expensive

Even a small rush order may need to ship by truck if it’s the only way to meet your timeline. Truck shipping costs start at $125 and increase depending on the destination and order size.

If ground shipping isn’t fast enough, you might need to upgrade to expedited courier service, which can double or even triple your usual shipping cost.

You (and Your Supplier) Can Make Errors on a Rush Order

Rush orders move fast. Once you confirm your order, it enters production immediately, leaving little room for error-checking on your end. That same urgency applies to our team.

With shorter timelines and added pressure, the risk of human error increases. We’ll never ship something that doesn’t meet our standards, but the faster pace means there’s less room to fix issues before they cause a delay.

A Rush Order That Doesn’t Ship on Time Can Cost You Money and Trust

Even with rush priority, your order might not ship on time. And when it doesn’t, it can cost more than just money. You might need to reschedule your install crew. Your client may lose trust. And if this rush order was already meant to fix a previous mistake, it can be even more damaging to your reputation.

What Happens If Your Rush Order Doesn’t Ship on Time?

At Cutting Edge, we provide a realistic estimated ship date or aim to match your requested ship date when you place a rush order. But if your order doesn’t ship on time, we waive the rush fee.

We’ll still complete your order as soon as possible, but we won’t charge you for the ship date we couldn’t deliver. It’s one more way we take the stress out of the process and protect your bottom line. We want to help you succeed, not hurt your reputation and schedule.
